Server upgraded

One of the servers, brie, had increasing CRC32 errors on one of the disks.

I took this as an opportunity to upgrade the Debian system from woody to sarge.

First I opened the system, added a new disk and replaced the 100Mbit network interface with a 1Gbit network card.

Installing Debian Sarge was simple. After the base installation I mounted the old disk and started to move over the old configuration.

To my surprise the job was almost completed lunch time.

While the cpu power remains the same, the system gives me a much more vivid reaction than before - maybe the newer linux kernel is performing better.

There were some configuration changes, eg apache vs. apache2, exim has been replaced by sendmail and others.

This computer now not only serves as server for video streams and the printer interface, but also holds backups of my production data. I hope this disk will last longer than the 2 years the other one survived...
