Combat & Slope Soaring Wing

May 13th 2011

bought a cheap flying wing kit. Ever since I first built a flying wing I was slightly infected with the flying wing virus. Saw this kit and thought it was something nice and small to have.

Kit misaligned bottom view build area motor mount fixed motor, prop, esc, receiver, battery almost complete ailerons taped up trying to position RC parts RC box test setup for maiden flight

Maiden flight on May 13th in the Schachen airfield.

The throws were too much on the first flight and the plane required a lot of trimming, probably because it's not perfectly symmetrical.
Overall the flight was successful althought it was a bit too windy for a first flight - at times I had troubles to control the plane.
It was hard for me to figure out the orientation of the plane in the air as I am not accustomed to see it flying.

The design is robust and none of my abrupt landings caused any damage.

Probably I'll cut some of the EPP in front to make the battery compartment larger - I guess a CG more upfront is easier to handle.

This might also help to fly the smaller battery - I did not want a speedy plane, but with the current weight and the 3cell battery it's quite a speedy setup

May 14th I was flying this plane in the center of the image on the right

After two unplanned and rather hard landings the plane was trimmed fine and flew very well.
I did about 10 minutes of flying and used less than half the battery - looks like I'm going to have much more fun with it!
