wingo with new motors - results

bought 'the geared motors for the wingo' and was dissapointed because they need 10cells...

Yesterday I received the motors with gears for the wingo - they were expensive and are supposed to double the thrust.

Supposed to - I was talking about the matter with Netsquash :

Session Start: Wed Jul 09 05:51:31 2003

Netsquash: Hi, I added a link on my site to your site

webtruck: thanks - whats your address?

Netsquash: www.geocities.com/netsquash35

Netsquash: I need to make some graphics

webtruck: when your at it, you can start with a webtruck logo - there's going to be a contest

Netsquash: ok

Netsquash: sure

webtruck: the pics wont load

Netsquash: there are no pics, I need to make them :-)

Netsquash: I am kind of half finished

Netsquash: ok which logo should i use?

webtruck: for you or webtruck?

Netsquash: webtruck

webtruck: whatever comes to your mind - if it shows www.webtruck.org it's a plus :-)

Netsquash: k

webtruck: light blue on blue is not so easy to read - for an old folk like me :-)

Netsquash: sorry, it is susposed to be silver on blue

webtruck: going to fly the plane just now...

Netsquash: cool

webtruck: when I increase the font size it is fine, but normaly I have rather small fonts so I dont need to scroll all the time - so first thing I did was ctrl-roll-the-middle-mouse-button - probably not what you'd want

just a thought

Netsquash: you show me somethign new, the ctrl mouse thing

webtruck: hehe

webtruck: going for a cup of coffe - I had just 2 hours of sleep - took me a while last night to fix up the new engines on the plane - brb

Netsquash: k

webtruck: back

webtruck: I will get my nikon in the air I hope - and hopefully savely back down

Netsquash: sweet! (Netsquash is looking at the cam using OfficeCam )

Netsquash: that thing is going to fly?!

webtruck: it's 400g with the servo

Netsquash: I would be concerned with crashing it and loseing the cam

webtruck: did you see the case I built?

Netsquash: How is it going to fit into the plane airodynamically?

Netsquash: no didn't get to see it

webtruck: not really...

Netsquash: :-D

webtruck: the plane has a loading bay behind the fuselage - it fits in there, but it looks big

Netsquash: oh

webtruck: http://www.webtruck.org/history/2003/june/wingo/20030630/detail_html?thispic=camcase2

webtruck: wind conditions are fine today - I only had crashes when there was too much wind

Netsquash: nice job

webtruck: the hole in the front is for the servo, the tube sticking out is for the lens - it has 1cm of foam all around the cam

Netsquash: would the internal components shake loose if it hit the ground?

webtruck: the lense moves out when it is turned on - dont know how solid that is - hope I wont test it

Netsquash: :-)

webtruck: the camera is 3 years old - I like it a lot, have no plans to break it, but it is replaceable

Netsquash: haha, yeah replacable but at a cost

Netsquash: looks like somebody is takeing the controls of the cam away from me :-)

webtruck: you can see how many people access it, I think

Netsquash: 4

webtruck: you can fight over it...

Netsquash: yeah :-)

Netsquash: is the zoom feature part of the cam or the program?

webtruck: it's the cam, and the software supports it

webtruck: going now - hope I will bring back some nice videos and stills

Netsquash: ok, I might be here when u get back

webtruck: hope I will be long - not because I have to fix the plane, but because I have 3 full battery packs - and the first one will be charged again when I finish the 3rd

Netsquash: :-)

webtruck: cu later

Netsquash: later man, have fun

LATER

webtruck: hmm - it was quite depressing...

Netsquash: why what happened?

webtruck: it seemed that the $$$$-motors had less power than the el cheapo motors

Netsquash: why's that?

webtruck: I dont know why - the motors are specified for 7.2V - they should work with my 6 and 7 cells pack - but no big effect

Netsquash: WELL THAT BLOWS

webtruck: I added some stuff at the bottom like a landing glider to protect the props, and once I removed it that was better, but still not as good as it was on the 30th of june

webtruck: the good thing about them is that it is far less noisy - but I wanted power, not silence

Netsquash: haha, you could drop a very small bomb with it

webtruck: and then when I went up with the 7cell pack it was doing better, but STUPID ME DID NOT PULL OUT THE ANTENNA ON THE SENDER... - and it had a hard landing which bent the wing - did not notice until I flew it again

webtruck: it was behaving weird, I landed it, saw the crack in the wing, and just came back here as I did not have the glue with me

webtruck: no flying with the cam :-(

Netsquash: That sucks

webtruck: and that is what I was working for till 4am...

webtruck: they recommend to use 8cells - but I dont have a 8 cell pack and my charger and the speed controller only do up to 7 cells

Netsquash: I know what you must feel like

webtruck: I bought 8cell stuff on ebay, but I have not received it as yet

webtruck: I also bought a TwinStar second hand - maybe that one does better...

Netsquash: I hope

webtruck: the plane I have now is called Wingo PORTER - so far it did not carry much more than just the battery pack...

Netsquash: that's a pretty lazy porter

webtruck: well - lunch time I'll fix the wing and maybe I'll go again later today - I also had to trim to the side a lot, I have to check if I have the motors aligned well

webtruck: I know the fuselage is curved a bit, as I did not glue it very straight, but last time it flew pretty well like that

Netsquash: The cargo doesn't shift does it?

webtruck: no, there was no cargo...

Netsquash: The camera?

webtruck: just the battery - at one speed setting the whole wing starts to vibrate - have to avoid that during flight

webtruck: I did not put the cam, as it was performing so bad

Netsquash: oh

Netsquash: least u didn't lose the camera then :-)

webtruck: (I was smart enough to try without load)

Netsquash: good thinking

webtruck: I'll add a july wingo page - I took 2 pics this morning with the plane on the ground and some last night after fixing up the motors

Netsquash: cool

webtruck: uncool compared to what I had planned to put on the web

Netsquash: That's true

webtruck: maybe I should go for the balloon...

Netsquash: A ballon would be cool, but not as exciting

webtruck: on the other hand I have spent so much on this RC flying stuff, I just want to have it working as expected

yes, you're right

Netsquash: It's always more fun to take the hard road and succeed after a lot of trial and error then to take the easy road and succeed the first try

webtruck: I was really dissapointed - you cant tell how it performs when you hold it - I expected so much more bang for the buck - the 2 motors cost more than the plane kit...

webtruck: you're right - maybe I should build a plane from scratch as this one looks quite old by now :-)

webtruck: I could put all 4 motors on it :-)

webtruck: on the wingo

webtruck: have to check if my speed controller can do it

Netsquash: 4 motors would take a big load wouldn't it?

webtruck: the bigger the load, the higher the speed to keep it up, the higher the landing speed...

Netsquash: and the bigger the chance of compleatly wrecking your plane

webtruck: right I told myself I'll keep it until it does not fly anymore - I'll even make a new wing, I plan for ~2m span

Netsquash: that would be really cool

webtruck: I have all the materials at home - I just need a rainy weekend

webtruck: the house is still building and I cant use my workshop yet - but building the wing is not so hard and messy

Netsquash: I find it fun to build stuff liek that, I use to build model rockets and hand make all the parts

Netsquash: I use to try and make the rockets reusable but the matrials I used would melt the engin compartment

webtruck: I never considered a rocket - I just bought the plane to get the camera in the air

I bought a cheap Aiptek cam on ebay to put on the plane, but I could not wait for it, so I built the coolpix case and wanted to try with that - maybe next time

Today I bent the aluminium rod that holds the tail quite a bit - it wont take much more of that...

webtruck: is it ok if I put our discussion on the web page? I dont feel like writing all over what happened...

Netsquash: sure go ahead

Netsquash: I have to go to bed, it's 3:42 here

Netsquash: talk to you later, hope you can get your bird flying again
